WILL GAO AND HUGH BONNEVILLE STAR IN NEW BRITISH COMEDY SHORT FILM, ‘DEAD CAT FILM’

Breakout star of Netflix hit Heartstopper Will Gao stars in a new short film, Dead Cat Film, which also features British national treasure Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill, Downton Abbey, Paddington). The film is a dark comedy which follows a woman (newcomer Josie Charles) who accidentally kills her flatmate’s cat, then becomes increasingly attached to its taxidermied corpse. In an unexpected twist, Bonneville provides the authoritative voice of the stuffed cat.

Will revealed his involvement in the film via Instagram, where he reposted a BTS picture on his story. His fans were quick to follow and expressed their excitement at seeing him in a new role, commenting that they “can’t wait” to see it.

The film was produced by BAFTA-nominated independent production company Rasp Films, and enjoyed an award-winning festival run at a number of BIFA and BAFTA-qualifying festivals (details below).

It was written and directed by duo Josie Charles & Nathan Miller. The release follows Josie winning the Oscar-qualifying Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance Film Festival in January for her new short fishing. They described Dead Cat Film as “absurd, macabre and fast-paced”. It was made with a 50% female cast and crew.

The film premieres online on Directors Notes on the 9th April 2024.
